Imports into the European Union (EU) of soybeans and maize-derived products have been disrupted by the EU’s 2003 regulation on detecting and tracing unauthorised GM products, a European Commission report has admitted.

Its first assessment of EC 1830/2003 (which also covers GM labelling) is not always positive. “Certain trading partners continue to allege that the regulation introduces an excessive administrative burden”, notes the report, which adds: “The asynchronous approval regime for GMOs between countries remains the major obstacle to trade. Whilst some trading partners have been able to successfully manage this issue to avoid trade disruption, others seem either unable or unwilling to address it.”
