Spanish frozen-seafood company Pescanova is looking to expand its fish production facilities in Portugal, local press has reported.

Citing Pescanova’s president Manuel Fernandez de Sousa, newswire Europapress said the company is searching for locations to build fish plants along the Portuguese coast, a move which the local government has welcomed.

Sousa was quoted saying that Pescanova could build a turbo fish factory in Portugal to elevate its production of that fish to 10,000 tonnes in five years.

Sousa played down rumours that Pescanova was looking to build the site in Portugal after the government of the Spanish Galicia region rejected the company’s plan to set up a plant in a protected environmental site of A Coruna.

Pescanova will continue to grow in Galicia in addition to Portugal, Sousa reportedly said.

Pescanova has a leading presence in Spain’s packaged frozen-fish and seafood market.
