Scientists Mary Chapman and Betty Ishida, working at the Agricultural Research Service in Albany, California, tested lycopene levels and antioxidant activity in 13 different ketchup brands, including the trendy new purple and green varieties. Their findings indicate that the three organic varieties had higher levels of lycopene, which helps protect against breast, prostate and pancreatic cancer. There are also indications that it can help prevent heart disease.

The scientists found that the darkest red ketchup brands had the highest lycopene levels.
