The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has released practical guidance on how Europe can shore up its defences against the import of foot-and-mouth disease.

With fresh outbreaks erupting in Argentina and cases continuing to occur in China and India, EFSA has declared: “With further globalisation, the resources needed to reduce the risk…will probably continue to grow”.

EFSA says better veterinary official checks at external borders are required, with closer cooperation with customs officers to prevent smuggling. It also suggested improved targeting checks using sniffer dogs and scanners. And the agency wants tighter controls of suppliers of food to ships and better monitoring and management of catering waste disposal.
