The US Trade Representative (USTR) office has launched an attack on the European Union’s (EU) negotiating position at the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) Doha Development Round agricultural talks.

In a detailed report, it says the EU’s proposals for cutting subsidies and tariffs “does not deliver substantial improvement of market access, and this low level of ambition threatens the ability to deliver meaningful results for the Doha round”.
It says the EU’s offer to cut tariffs by 39% on average, while allowing higher duties for “sensitive products”, whose producers are vulnerable to foreign competition, “pales in comparison” to the US proposals of 55-95% cuts for developed countries.
