Brazil has joined the 126 signatories of the Cartagena Protocol supporting labelling indicating that produce ‘may contain modified live organisms’. According to a report by Agência Brasil, this is preferred to the proposal that labels should feature the statement ‘contains modified live organisms’ because this would require extensive and costly crop detection and tracking procedures.


The Cartagena Protocol, which entered into effect in September 2003, addresses the affects of the transportation and trade of GM modified agricultural produce.


The US has not ratified the protocol and has expressed concern over its effect on international agricultural trade.
