The Safeway supermarket in Maryborough, Australia, was yesterday fined A$4,750 (US$2,436) by the local Magistrate’s Court.

Last year a woman broke her tooth and lacerated her mouth while eating a pizza which contained a 1cm-long metal clip. The supermarket was unable to explain how the clip had got into the pizza, which it had made in-store.


The supermarket followed the line of least resistance, pleading guilty to selling the product. It agreed to pay A$4,000 costs, and accepted a fine of A$750 without conviction.
