The PDO status was awarded following two years of negotiations during which objections concerning the thermal processing of the milk used in the production of the cheese and animal feeding practices were dismissed.
Under the PDO status, only cheese produced in the Valle de Joux region will be able to be called Vacherin Mont d’Or.
The cheese is produced seasonally, between 15 August and 31 March, and is traditionally sold in round pine-wood boxes, reported the Swiss News Digest.
