Poland’s Suempol has returned to its roots in shrimp processing and distribution with the acquisition of Van Biesen & Pieters in Belgium.

Family-owned Van Biesen & Pieters, based in Sint-Gillis-Waas, East Flanders, is the latest addition to Suempol’s portfolio having expanded through M&A since 2010 in markets such as the UK and France.

Suempol claims to be Poland’s oldest smoked salmon business despite only starting out in 1989. It also supplies fresh salmon in various packaged formats including value-added products like breaded, meatballs and frankfurters.

Van Biesen & Pieters’ origins date to the 1940s.

“We believe that Van Biesen & Pieters’ experience and reputation in the Belgian market will be a significant asset in further strengthening our position internationally,” Maciej Jaworowski, vice president of Suempol’s board, said in a statement today (5 September).

“We are pleased that the current owner, now representing the fourth generation, remains with the team and will actively support and participate in the joint development of not only Van Biesen & Pieters, but also our entire family.”

The most recent acquisition struck by Suempol, which is headquartered in the town of Bielsk Podlaski, was UK-based fresh fish supplier Copernus last year.

In 2013, it also bought Marcel-Baey, a French smoked salmon peer based in Bolougne-sur-Mer. Three years earlier it snapped up Germany’s Norfisk Delikatessen, a business also engaged in the production of smoked salmon.

Having originally started out as a shrimp processor and exporter to the Netherlands and Belgium, Suempol said the purchase of Van Biesen & Pieters “sees the company returning to its roots, simultaneously expanding its offerings with top-quality shrimp and opening up new growth opportunities”.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Anthony Pieters, managing director of Van Biesen & Pieters, said in the same statement, noting the amalgamation of processing plants: “I believe that together we will be able to develop strong foundations, expand our business reach, and provide our customers with products that meet the highest standards.

“With production facilities and offices in Poland, Germany, Norway, France, the UK, and now Belgium, we are strengthening our position as one of the leading family-owned seafood companies in Europe.”
