The Nutriment Company (TNC) has notched up its eighth pet-food acquisition of the year with a deal for Easy-Barf in France.

Sweden-based TNC said the transaction for the fresh pet-food business gives it a “strong foothold” in France. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Describing the deal as a “strategic move”, Anders Kristiansen, CEO of TNC, said in a statement: “France, with Europe’s third largest pet population, is a crucial market in our growth strategy. Easy-Barf immediately positions us as the leader in the French raw pet-food segment.”

Easy-Barf was set up in 2015 by Ariane Byhet and David Boulle. Around 80% of its sales are conducted online.

TNC said it will expand the Easy-Barf range into fresh gently cooked products, while also “leveraging its B2B capabilities to bring Easy-Barf into the retail sector”.

It added: “This step will further strengthen the rapidly growing natural premium pet-food market in France and make high-quality natural nutrition more accessible for pet owners across the country.”

Easy-Barf’s owners said: “We are confident that The Nutriment Company is the perfect owner to take the business forward. We are excited to follow the continued growth of natural premium pet food in France.”

Speaking to Just Food last month, CEO Kristiansen indicated that TNC had a couple of deals lined up for this year to build on the company’s acquisition spree.

“We are adding one new market in two or three weeks, and then we’ll probably add an additional market before the end of the year,” he said, noting an interest in eastern Europe.

“Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, all of eastern Europe is of interest for us, so that’s where you will see an announcement for an acquisition in one of those markets in a few weeks,” the CEO added.

In July, TNC acquired UK-based cat-food supplier Purrform, adding a “new dimension of species-specific expertise to its brand portfolio”.

The company also purchased Graf Barf, a German private-label pet-food business, in June.

Graf Barf’s acquisition came after TNC acquired BAF Petfood from the German company Fressnapf and snapped up Bulmer Pet Foods in the UK.
