In a statement yesterday (1 December), Horizon said the deal will expand its portfolio of “better-for-you” food and beverages and “strengthen” its presence across retail channels.

Tyler Holm, the chief executive of Horizon, said Maple Hill’s know-how in grass-fed organic dairy would “complement” Horizon’s existing business.

“Together, we will be better positioned to serve our customers, support our farmers and suppliers, and drive innovation and growth in the organic dairy industry,” he said.

The company said the acquisition would broaden access to grass-fed organic products and bring together resources and expertise to “accelerate” product development and create fresh “opportunities” in organic dairy.

It added the combined group would benefit from “stronger” supply chains and “complementary” capabilities aimed at improving efficiency and resilience.

According to Horizon, the transaction will also increase support for sustainable farming and regenerative agriculture.

Formerly known as Horizon Organic, Horizon Family Brands was a brand within Danone until its sale to Platinum Equity in early 2024.

Meanwhile, Maple Hill Creamery, established in 2009, focuses on 100% grass-fed, organic dairy and emphasises regenerative agricultural practices.

In 2016, Sunrise Strategic Partners, a US-based investment group in the food industry founded by ex-Boulder Brands CEO Steve Hughes, acquired a non-disclosed minority interest in Maple Hill, in partnership with private-equity group Trilantic North America.

Jim Hau, the president and CEO of Maple Hill, said: “Joining forces with Horizon is an incredible opportunity to amplify Maple Hill’s mission and impact. This partnership is about more than growth. It’s about shared values, supporting sustainable farming practices and delivering the highest quality 100% grass-fed organic dairy products to consumers.”

He added: “We see this as a great opportunity to build a stronger future for the organic dairy space through the enhancement and growth of the Maple Hill grass-fed organic product offering.”
