The European Union looks set to back away from proposals to establish universal laws to govern the segregation of genetically modified crops.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, EU regulators will conclude, in a report made public tomorrow, that the situation for crops in each country is too complex to introduce an umbrella rule governing them all.

This report comes shortly after the EU’s Joint Research Centre concluded that the parallel production of genetically modified and non-GM food is practical without major precautions.

A spokesperson for the EU declined to comment on the rumours when contacted by just-food.
