Italy’s DalterFood Group has expanded cheese distribution in Europe with the acquisition of For Food France.

DalterFood already exports its Italian cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano to its European neighbour. The company said the transaction is “part of a targeted growth strategy” to better serve its retail and foodservice customers in France.

Financial terms were not disclosed in a statement from the Sant’Ilario d’Enza, Reggio Emilia-based business.

“The creation of a commercial subsidiary in France, made possible by the acquisition of For Food France, is a key strategic step for DalterFood Group, further confirming our desire to consolidate and strengthen our presence in major European markets, replicating in France the success model already implemented in the UK and Germany,” general manager Andrea Guidi said.

DalterFood operates in Germany through its subsidiary Vip-Italia and through Dalter in the UK. The company said it also holds a stake in the Brazilian company producing Italian cheeses and cured meats CMC.

Guidi confirmed the Italian group generated a “record” turnover of €200m ($232.1m) last year.

France, the business said, imported around 144,000 tonnes of Italian cheeses in 2024, such as mozzarella, Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano, making it the second largest market after Italy.

Mauro Zuliani founded For Food France in 2020 to import Italian cheese. He will remain a “partner” post the transaction and will head up the local subsidiary for DalterFood, Guidi said.

“His vast experience and deep knowledge of the market are a guarantee of continuity for customers and a key factor in fully capturing the opportunities currently offered by the French market,” he added.

Zuliani said the acquisition by DalterFood marks a “significant evolution” for his business.

“Being part of a solid and structured group, with a strong focus on product quality and a consultative approach to customers, will allow us to offer an even broader product portfolio and provide increasingly qualified support, thanks to the skills and synergies developed within the various companies of the group,” Zuliani said.

DalterFood operates two cutting and cheese packaging plants in Italy through Dalter Alimentari located in Sant’Ilario d’Enza.

It also has dairies operated by Colline di Canossa in Selvapiana and Cigarello.
