Italy’s Barilla is set to expand its pasta factory in New York state under a two-phase project aimed at increasing its production capacity in the US.

In a statement yesterday (20 May), a statement issued by the office of New York Governor Kathy Hochul said Barilla will invest $145m in the first phase at the facility in Avon.

Melissa Tendick, the president of Barilla’s business in the Americas, said the spending would help the company “meet growing demand” in the US.

The initial phase will involve the construction of a 52,000-square-foot production building, alongside one new production line and three packaging lines.

A further warehouse will also be built to handle storage and distribution from the additional output.

The extra space is intended to support the installation of a second line in phase two, which will represent the next stage of investment.

Phase one is scheduled for completion by March 2028.

Barilla’s Avon site began operations in 2007 following an initial $75m investment announced a year earlier and created around 145 jobs.

The company expects the latest expansion to add more than 90 roles once both phases are finished.

Hochul said: “This continued partnership will serve to highlight the region’s great agricultural assets and investment in advanced manufacturing, building on the efforts of my administration to continue to reinvigorate communities, generating economic growth across the state.”

Barilla also manufactures pasta for the US market at a site in Iowa.

Fabio Pettenari, vice-president of supply chain at Barilla Americas, said: “This expansion marks an important step in our continued growth in the US and underscores our commitment to the Town of Avon.”

The family-owned company reported revenue of €4.84bn ($5.61bn) in 2025, with the Americas contributing 22.4% of group sales.

EBIT rose 26.5% to €370.8m, while net income climbed nearly 64% to €233.2m.

Barilla said the US pasta retail channel grew in both value and volume in 2025, supported by firmer domestic consumption.

Group capital expenditure increased to €280m from €250m, including upgrades at its Ames, Iowa plant.

The company employs about 9,000 people worldwide and operates 30 plants across 11 countries.
