According to the North American Meat Processors Association, Health Canada is soon to follow the example of the US, which authorised irradiation for meat five years ago. Health Canada currently allows irradiation on onions, potatoes, flour and spices.
Elements within the scientific community disapprove of irradiation, as they believe it can cause chemicals that lead to cancer. They feel this offsets the known benefits of irradiation in reducing food borne illness.
