A recent survey shows that discount supermarkets in Israel have increased their share of food sales, from 28% three years ago to 37.4% today, and that since the beginning of the hostilities in the region, there has been a 20% decline in food sales to institutions, according to a survey released by the Food Division of the Israel Manufacturers Association.
Gezy Kaplan, Chairman of the Manufacturers Association’s Food Division, noted that the decline of food sales to institutions, such as hotels and restaurants, is a direct result of the sharp fall of incoming tourism to Israel since the beginning of October. The survey shows that the market share of neighbourhood grocery stores and mini-markets fell to 15.7% today compared with 21.6% in 1997.
