Bindi, creator of authentic Italian and European desserts since 1946, announces that their first U.S. manufacturing plant will open in Belleville, New Jersey by the summer of 2001. The plant will operate under Bindi North America, a subsidiary of the Italian company.
Construction on the new plant should start in the fall and initially comprise 30,000 square feet. The company expects to originally employ 30 people to produce gelato and sorbetto, based on Bindi’s original Italian recipes, in bulk and individual portions for the foodservice trade. Other production capabilities might be added in the future.

Manufacturing capacity will be 200 gallons per hour and the products will be distributed nationally by a Bindi subsidiary, Dessert Services, Inc. of Totowa, New Jersey, exclusive importers/distributors of Bindi products in North America.
According to Rino Bindi, Managing Director of the parent company, “Bindi is known for exceptional quality desserts, and product quality will be exactly the same as in Italy. Key personnel from the United States will be sent to Italy for training and quality control and technical supervisors will be sent from Italy to New Jersey. Ingredients will have to meet the same high standards, and certain ones, such as lemon juice, will be imported.”

The past three years have seen a very fast pace of growth, and we believe now is the time to invest and plan for the future. We decided to meet the specific needs of our American customers by supplying our gelato and sorbetto locally.”
With more than 600 employees, Bindi currently ships products from its plant just outside Milan to all five continents. The company has had a presence in the U.S. for over a decade, and currently operates its own warehouses and seven regional distribution centers. Over 20 carefully selected product distributors serve the foodservice industry in major metropolitan areas. They are chosen by Bindi based on their ability to ensure product integrity and deliver quality service.
