In Australia, the Gene Technology Regulator is still mulling the commercial release of GM canola, but Cargill has made no secret of its readiness to sell the crop into GM-friendly markets in Asia, reports ABC.

Should the Gene Technology Regulator give GM canola the go-ahead, it could be grown in parts of Southern Australia as early as this winter.

Cargill’s Ian Baker says the oilseed giant was keen to be involved right from the start. “Certainly on the marketing we don’t see any major hurdles. We think it’s important to be involved in the process from day one so that we can learn and prove the processes and continue to give farmers and consumers the choice.”
