The Corporate Executive Board of Royal Ahold, the international food provider, has appointed Tom den Hertog President & CEO of its Brazilian subsidiary Bompreço, effective November 1, 2000.

Den Hertog is a seasoned retail executive who has developed Ahold’s presence in the Asian markets and is currently President and CEO of Ahold Asia Pacific as well as President & CEO of the company’s activities in Thailand. Earlier in his career, Den Hertog held executive positions at Albert Heijn, Ahold’s Dutch flagship supermarket company, and at Ahold Institutional Food Supply (now Deli XL).

Recently, Ahold acquired the 50% of Bompreco’s voting shares held by the Paes Mendonça family, founders of the company. For many years in a row, the company was led by Joao Carlos Paes Mendonca as Chairman and CEO. At the recent transfer of the family shares in the company, Mr. Paes Mendonca decided to step down from his responsibilities and continue in an advisory capacity to the Bompreco board. From then on, the professional management team of Bompreco was led by interim-CEO Marcelo Tavares who is also a Board member.

Ahold formed a 50/50 partnership with Bompreço in December 1996. Bompreço is the leading food retailer in northeastern Brazil with the majority of its operations in Recife and Salvador. In 1999, the company generated sales of Euro 1.3 billion through 61 supermarkets, 19 hypermarkets and 22 other food retail stores. The company employs 21,500 associates.

Den Hertog (53) studied at Rotterdam and Stanford University. He is married with two children and plans to relocate to Bompreço’s headquarters in Recife.
