Minneapolis, Minn.-based pickle manufacturer M.A. Gedney Company has finalized its acquisition of the pickle and related products business from Cains Foods LP, of Ayer, Mass., it was announced today.
Under terms of the agreement, Gedney has acquired the Cains’ plant located at 15 Jewett Avenue, South Deerfield, Mass., which manufactures pickles, peppers, relish and sauces for sale under the Cains and Oxford brands. The new entity will be called Cains’ Pickles, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of M. A. Gedney Company.
Gedney President Jeff Tuttle, a fifth-generation descendant of Gedney Founder Mathias A. Gedney, will serve as president and CEO of the newly acquired firm. Tom Hitch, who will relocate from Minneapolis to South Deerfield, will serve as vice president and general manager. Tuttle said that Gedney plans to continue operating the South Deerfield plant and all transportation and plant employees will be retained. He also indicated that Gedney plans to continue to rely on local sources of supply in the Deerfield area market.
Family-owned and operated, M.A. Gedney Company has been preparing premium quality pickles since 1881. Today, in addition to more than 50 varieties of pickles, the Minnesota-based company produces nearly 200 original products including preserves, relishes, salsa and condiments that are enjoyed in the Upper Midwest and throughout the rest of the country.
Cains Foods started as a food distributor in Boston in 1914. It began manufacturing mayonnaise in 1925 and entered the pickle manufacturing business in 1955. Cains All Natural Mayonnaise is a leading brand in New England grocery stores, along with its tartar sauce and salad dressings.
Cains’ pickle, relish and related products business is today the number two brand of pickles and the number one brand of relish in the New England market. Over the years the company has developed into a leading supplier to the foodservice trade for pickles, relish, mayonnaise and salad dressings in the Northeast United States.
