Newark-based United Community Corporation is a community self-help organization established in 1964 as part of President Johnson’s “Great Society” program. The group previously owned and operated a family-style restaurant in Newark and has hosted restaurant training programs.

Manhattan Bagel’s Newark location, which incorporates certain graphic elements of the chain’s newest design, offers seating for 100 on two dining levels. In addition to more than 20 varieties of fresh bagels baked throughout the day, the store features an extensive selection of luncheon sandwiches on a choice of a bagel, wrap or roll; a comprehensive catering program; and a fresh-brewed selection of Manhattan Bagel’s proprietary premium coffees.

“This venture is about more than raising funds for community work,” said Floyd Melvin, CEO of United Community Corporation. “This is a training tool for the unemployed, a way to let men and women become self-sufficient.”

“We are pleased to team with an organization like United Community Corporation to launch Manhattan Bagel’s first Newark location,” said New World Coffee-Manhattan Bagel president and COO William C. Rianhard. “We anticipate exploring similar innovative opportunities with other worthy organizations in selected areas throughout the country, in addition to our traditional franchise activities.”
