UK supermarket operator Tesco strengthened its dominance of the British supermarket sector in the latest quarter, according to sales data released by industry researcher Taylor Nelson Sofres.

The data showed Tesco’s market share of the grocery sector increased to 26.4% in the 12 weeks to 30 March, up from 25.5% a year earlier, reported Reuters.


UK rival Asda also increased its market share. The chain, which is owned by US retail giant Wal-Mart, increased its market share by half a percentage point to 16.3% over the same period.


Sainsbury’s market share fell to 16.8% in the 12 weeks to 30 March, down from 17.4% in the year-ago period.


Takeover target Safeway saw its market share fall 0.7 percentage points to 9.7%, while Big Food Group’s frozen food chain Iceland saw its market share fall 0.3 percentage points to 2.2%.
