Jens Nymand-Christensen, head of the European Commission’s international food, veterinary and phytosanitary unit, told Reuters that the new EU food safety authority must earn the trust of consumers by delivering accurate information to the public.
Speaking on the fringes of a four-day EU food safety conference in Budapest, Nymand-Christensen is reported to have said it was up to the new EFSA to earn the trust of consumers, just as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had done in the US.

Reuters quotes him as saying that the EFSA “has to get up and running and gradually win that kind of respect”.
“The EFSA will never solve a crisis,” he said: “It is not meant to. It is a risk assessor. Our politicians will manage the crisis. They will choose what to do when you have food scares.”
