Spanish fruit cooperative Sanalfruit SA, has revealed that it has invested €3m (US$2.6m) in the construction of a new 4,000m² fruit-processing plant situated in Ribarroja, in the eastern region of Valencia.


The company explained that the plant will supply a new product, tubs of peeled and sliced fruit, to the Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona. The product is due to be launched by the retailer in 63 of its 589 supermarkets across Spain by the second half of this year.


Sanalfruit aims to start production of 70,000 tubs a day, with a view to eventually producing 300,000 tubs a day.


The Valencian regional government financed 10% of the firm’s investment.
