In a move to ease anti-competition concerns from the Spanish government, retailer Carrefour España (a unit of French giant Carrefour) has announced that it will put 12 large hypermarkets up for sale. Throughout Spain, 3 Supermercados Champion, 15 Supeco Maxors and 12 Tiendas DIA stores are also due to be sold, subject to the approval of the Spanish competition authorities.

Carrefour España was created from a €15.6bn merger between Carrefour and Promodès, the majority shareholders of Spain’s largest retailers; Centros Comerciales Pryca and Centros Comerciales Continente. A condition of the merger deal was that some of the company’s assets were sold.
