World demand for amino acids – the protein building blocks found in all living cells – is projected to advance 5.6 percent per annum to $7.5 billion in 2004. In real terms, sales will advance 4.5 percent annually to 5.8 billion pounds over the same period. Overall, the industry is poised for healthy growth in the coming years, thanks to burgeoning applications in animal feed, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. On the downside, lingering concerns about the alleged health effects of monosodium glutamate (MSG) and fairly modest growth in food and beverage shipments among developed countries will restrain growth somewhat. These and other trends are presented in World Amino Acids, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industrial market research firm.
Animal feed additives are expected to be the leading category of amino acid products, as livestock breeders around the globe seek to reduce input costs. Among individual products, lysine will lead the way, as it becomes an increasingly popular component in chicken and pig diets. Methionine will also fare well; although most consumption will be limited to poultry, certain products such as rumen-bypass methionine will post healthy gains in the cattle market. The fastest growth will be in newer products such as threonine and tryptophan, albeit from smaller bases.

Among products consumed by humans, an expanding retail market for dietary supplements and nutritional products containing amino acids will result from healthier, active lifestyles, coupled with strong incentives promoting preventive medicine. In addition, an increasing focus on nutrition by medical providers will boost the demand for amino acids in nutritional preparations. Moreover, anti-aging cosmeceuticals and artificial sweeteners will also provide favorable growth opportunities as evolving demographic and social patterns make consumers more appearance- and weight-conscious.
The Asia/Pacific region will continue to be the leader in amino acid production and consumption, largely due to the enormous size of the MSG market in that part of the world, while China’s rapid adoption of amino acid feed additives will also bolster demand; however, the maturity of the MSG market will slow overall growth in Asia. The most rapid advances will likely take place in the emerging markets of Africa/Mideast and Latin America.
