The new organic labeling standards hinted at by the U.S. Department of Agriculture bode well for food and beverage manufacturers, says consulting firm Promar International. “Secretary Glickman’s recent comments are good in two ways,” notes Promar VP Don Westfall. “Most importantly, the standards will help provide uniformity and credibility for the expanding US organic market. In addition, the standards should reassure mainstream manufacturers that organic foods would not be presented as having inherently superior nutrition and health benefits as compared to processed foods.”

Uniform standards were cited in a Promar study of the US organic market (FROM SUB-CULTURE TO SUPERMARKET: Organic foods grow up) as crucial for propelling the market forward. And, says Promar, clear standards should be viewed as an opportunity — not a threat — to mainstream players. With the organic market growing at a rate far faster than that of the broader food industry, Promar contends that manufacturers should be taking a serious interest in understanding what it means for growing their business, now and in the future. “Some major food companies have bought their way into the organic market as a way to hedge their bets,” remarks Westfall. Yet, he notes, “There remains plenty of room for others to stake their claim in a dynamic area that has not yet reached critical mass in America’s supermarkets.”
