Food schemes due to run in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh during this fiscal year were given a Rs114.8bn boost this week, by rural development minister M Venkaiah Naidu.

The schemes are designed to provide some security to senior citizens in the areas, providing each person with a free supply of 10 kgs of foodgrains every month.

The government had earmarked RS6.1bn to pay for the handouts, but news of the additional funds was given in an official statement today. The statement also revealed that the foodgrains would be distributed by regional offices of the Food Corporation of India (FCI), working in conjunction with the Food and Civil Supplies Departments of the respective states.
