The government has backed a £31m investment in the first phase of a strategy that will see family controlled company S&A Foods double its curry production and create more than 1,100 new jobs in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.
Dubbed “Britain’s curry queen,” Perween Warsi is the richest Asian businesswoman in the country. Disappointed by the poor quality of Indian food in the British shops, she began the business in 1986, cooking samosas in her own kitchen for a local takeaway restaurant. Thanks to the growing love affair between the British and eastern dishes, S&A (named after Warsi’s sons, Sadiq and Abid) now specialises in Indian, Thai and Chinese foods, and posts an annual turnover of about £80m.
Based in Derby, where it employs more than 1,100 workers, S&A produces ready meals under supermarket labels for Asda, Safeway, Morrison’s and Waitrose. A government grant of £5m encouraged the movement of S&A to the newly designated regional assistance area, where upon implementation of the second phase in the company’s expansion, another 1,200 jobs could be created in 2003/4.
Warsi commented yesterday: “We are continually breaking new ground and this site represents the next stage in our rapid development. It is my vision to see people all round the world enjoying our meals.”
