In a worldwide first, the Cabinet of the Indian Government has decided to legislate
all food packages to specify whether the contents are vegetarian or not. The Prevention
of Food Adulteration Act’s Rules 1955 will be amended, and manufacturers will
have six months time to fall in line. Easier said than done, since (a) there is
no consensus about the status of unfertilised eggs, and (b) the government is
unable to compel Coke and Pepsi to declare the absence of fruit
in their soft drinks despite a decade old law: a similar six month moratorium
has now stretched over ten years.

About 30% Indians are completely vegetarian.
