Former B&Q and Kingfisher executive Stephen Robertson has been appointed as director general of the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

Robertson, who has also had roles at Mars and Unilever, replaces Kevin Hawkins, who announced his plans to retire from the role in July.

BRC chairman Sir Geoff Mulcahy said Robertson’s “range of high-level experience will help us to promote the interests of retailers in the challenging times ahead”.

Robertson, who will take up the role next February, was marketing director at B&Q and director of communications at Kingfisher.
