The disaster of deregulation may soon be remedied, as new agriculture minister Kim Chance has promised to consider extra help from dairy farmers. Speaking at the annual conference of the WA Farmer’s Federation, Chance said the government would look at offering initiatives above and beyond those already given by the federal government.

“Farmers are not getting a fair price and savings are being absorbed by the supply chain, not given to consumers,” said Chance, adding: “The WA industry is getting dangerously close to the minimum critical mass; if it drops below a certain point the decline could become irreversible.”
With regard to the new initiatives to help arable farmers, Chance said: “I don’t think we have looked at every possibility for getting the private sector involved.” New ideas involve an extension of the current multi-peril crop insurance, which currently only covers hail and fire damage.
This idea could bring some stability to areas such in western Australia where farmers have battled against crop losses for the past three years.
