Tengelmann, which has already ceded control of its Plus stores in Germany, has admitted it is reviewing the business throughout Europe, where it runs outlets in eight countries.

Speculation has abounded that Tengelmann is set to sell its Plus stores in Romania and Bulgaria to Carrefour and also plans to offload outlets in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland to Tesco.

Spar Austria has also been linked to the Plus business in that country.

However, a Tengelmann spokesperson insisted talks were “ongoing” and that “no decision” had been made over the future of any of the stores.
