Schirnhofer confirmed its interest to just-food today (22 November) with a spokesperson revealing that the company is in talks with Tengelmann.

Tengelmann is reviewing its network of Plus discount stores throughout Europe. Last week, the company, which also owns US retailer A&P, sold control of its German Plus stores to retail giant Edeka.

Edeka, which will become Europe’s fourth-largest food retailer once its German deal with Tengelmann is finalized, has also been linked with a move for the Plus stores in Austria. Officials at Edeka could not be reached for immediate comment.

For its part, Tengelmann admitted it is in talks with potential partners over the future of its Plus network in Europe but declined to comment specifically on its Austrian business.
