Cargill, the US-based food and agribusiness group, has begun producing compound and other types of chocolate for the food industry in Brazil.

The company said its Porto Ferreira plant, in the state of São Paulo, began production this month to supply the domestic market.


Saskia Korink, who heads Cargill’s cocoa and chocolate business unit, said the initiative would allow the company to “provide high-quality, valued-added products in Brazil”.


Cargill has invested some US$5m in developing the Porto Ferreira plant, which has an annual production capacity of 10,000 metric tons, and has scope for further upgrading and expansion.


Cargill is the largest cocoa processor in Latin America and has been active in Brazil’s cocoa industry for 25 years. The company has until now produced liquor, powder, and cocoa butter, but the new development will allow it to supply industrial customers with bulk and compound chocolate.
