The European Commission announced yesterday (Tuesday) that cod fishing in two areas off west Scotland will be banned in until 30th April in view of an “imminent danger of collapse” of stocks of the fish. Fishermen seeking other species in the waters will be subject to new technical and control measures to ensure they don’t threaten cod. The ban follows a similar move announced on 7 February to protect North Sea cod and is part of an emergency programme to allow cod spawning, leading to a long-term recovery plan in June. The measures were decided after consultation with the food industry and affect seas near the Clyde estuary and the far north-west of Scotland.
