The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has reason to believe that the recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease has been brought about by the importation of sheep from Carlisle market in Great Britain. Licence to import these sheep was on the condition that they move directly to a slaughter house. It is the Department’s understanding that they were, in fact, taken to farms in Northern Ireland, and possibly the Republic of Ireland, rather than having been slaughtered.
Any member of the public or the farming community having any knowledge regarding the whereabouts of these sheep is asked, for the sake of our farming industry, to make this information known to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. They can do this by contacting their Divisional Veterinary Office or by phoning the DARD confidential hotline at 0808 100 2716.
