The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has warned that it may rule some 300 nutrient sources for fortified or enriched food and food supplements are potentially unsafe, unless it is provided with more information.

EFSA says current dossiers submitted by manufacturers are incomplete, and has asked the UK’s Food Standards Authority for assistance, because it has also been probing these substances.
Under current EU legislation, an EFSA scientific opinion on the safety of such sources is required for their continued use in food supplements, fortified foods and foods for particular nutritional purposes. These sources can continue to be used until December 2009, if dossiers were submitted before July 2005 for assessment by EFSA.
However, in a statement, the agency said that 300 of the dossiers it has received “were basic one page submissions”, while just 200 were adequate for scientific study.
