Michel-Edouard Leclerc criticised companies for passing on rising commodity costs to consumers. He cited dairy groups Danone and Lactalis for pushing up prices by around 18%.
The price of pasta brands Barilla and Lustucru have also soared – by 32% and 23% respectively – amid rising durum wheat prices.
In his blog, Leclerc also slammed French consumer minister Luc Chatel. France’s parliament is to debate Chatel’s proposed reform to the Loi Galland on 21 November, which prohibits below cost selling.
Leclerc is calling for a supermarket free-for-all to negotiate prices directly instead of the current system of a unified price list and negotiations for a year-end discount.
