US produce group Calavo Growers has signed a deal to distribute the Maui Gold fresh pineapple brand throughout North America.
Calavo, renowned for its avocado business, will take on the Hawaiian brand from next month. Chairman, president and CEO Lee Cole said Maui Gold is an “ideal fit” with Calavo’s portfolio.
He added: “As someone who is a considerable pineapple consumer, I believe Maui Gold is the best tasting pineapple available in today’s market.”
Calavo has acted as a distributor of tropical fruit from Hawaii since 2003, when it bought Maui Fresh International and became the largest importer of Hawai‘i-grown Kapoho Solo papayas.
Gerry Watts, general manager of Maui Pineapple Company, the owner of the Maui Gold brand, said: “Calavo’s growing presence in the tropical and specialty produce sector combined with their modern warehousing and distribution capabilities will bring significant economies to our mainland operations.”
