German discount retailer Netto has been found guilty of selling products below the cost price.
The retailer, a unit of retail group Edeka, sold milk and chocolate below the cost price during December 2006 and January this year.
German competition law does allow retailers to sell products below cost but Netto violated the regulations with offers that lasted three weeks, according to Germany’s Federal Cartel Office.
An Edeka spokesperson told just-food today (1 November) that the company “accepted” the decision but said selling below-cost for short periods is a common practice in Germany.
“A lot of retailers practice these offers because the competition is so big in Germany,” she said.
