Netherlands-based retailer Spar expects to open over 250 supermarkets in Spain by 2012 to profit from the country’s growing foodstuffs market.

A Spar spokesperson confirmed the company’s plans to just-food today (25 October). Spar intends to roll out roughly 50 supermarkets a year as it takes on local Spanish retailers like Champion, Dia and Lidl, which are also expanding aggressively.


Spar, which set up 60 stores in Spain last year, will also overhaul some of its 1520-strong Spanish store network, most of them operated by main licence partner Spar Espanola.


Spar recently opened a supermarket in Burgos, northern Spain and plans to open a larger outlet in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) in mid-November.


The chain, which operates through 14 licence partners in Spain, has 20 distribution centres in the country. Spar operates has some 13,700 stores in 34 countries worldwide.
