Laboratory tests have confirmed salmonellosis in 16 people. But investigators say some 300 others also have reported having symptoms consistent with salmonellosis. All of the ill are believed to have consumed food or drink in the hotel at various times from 17 March through 12 April. The ill are from all 50 states.

Salmonellosis is usually contracted by eating contaminated food or drink. The illness also can be spread person-to-person via a fecal-oral transmission route.

Health authorities said no source of the illnesses has been determined. Local health authorities are working with hotel staff to modify food service options until a specific source of the illnesses is identified.

The investigation by federal, state and local health authorities continues.

Salmonellosis is a bacterial illness.  Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.  Symptoms usually last from four to seven days. The incubation period, or time from exposure to illness, is usually six to 72 hours.

Most people who become ill recover without treatment, but the infection can be deadly.  More serious effects are associated with severe diarrhea or with the spreading of the infection from the intestines to the bloodstream.

Infants, the elderly and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to experience severe effects. In some, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized.
