France’s National Food Industries Association (ANIA) today roundly rebutted the findings of Jacques Attali’s French national economic think tank.

ANIA president Jean-René Buisson challenged Attali’s suggestion that removing retail planning restrictions or legalising below cost selling would kick start the retail economy.


The Attali commission itself stressed the lack of competition between retailers.
Six multiples already hold a position of power over 10,000 suppliers.


Under these circumstances, the ANIA argued, legalising below-cost selling would just give total power to the multiples and choke any commercial discussions.


“Food manufacturers want to contribute to the necessary reforms needed to achieve the government’s different political target. However, ANIA is opposed to any dismantling of the current structures, without a workable replacement,” Buisson declared.
