Russian officials from the veterinary department of the Agriculture Ministry revealed earlier today [Tuesday] that salmonella bacteria were discovered in US poultry meat imported into Russia.

A spokeswoman told Reuters: “St Petersburg veterinarians have checked nine different shipments of US poultry and discovered salmonella bacteria in all nine.”

Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev has proposed a ban on US poultry imports, to come into effect from 10 March. The ministry also stopped issuing licences for these imports from 1 March due to safety concerns.

In the US meanwhile, a team of experts is being put together in order to discuss the topic with Moscow officials. The US claims that the proposed ban has no legitimate basis.
