Brazilian food group Sadia is to join a UN programme that will allow the business to sell carbon credits from next year.
The company confirmed to just-food that it has signed up to the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism project to sell credits to polluting industries and companies.
Sadia’s hog farm programme, 3S, has qualified for the UN scheme. The 3S initiative has seen Sadia spend some BRL90m (US$51.6m) on treating animal waste to turn it into fertilzer or energy. Thanks to the project, Sadia has cut its carbon emissions by as much as 21 times.
The group is a subsidiary of Brazilian food group Perdigao. Earlier this year, the companies agreed to merge to form Brasil Foods, although the deal is still waiting for the green light from the country’s anti-trust watchdog.
