The union said it had broken off talks with Interstate due to the company’s “intransigent positions” and “refusal” to discuss alternative options available to the company as it emerges from bankruptcy.


The union also claimed that Interstate is demanding that workers make further concessions in the negotiations or face fresh job cuts.


Last month, Interstate said it would close down its bread business in Southern California, making around 1,300 employees redundant.


“We refuse to negotiate with a gun to our heads,” said Teamsters official Jim Hoffa. “Our members will take the necessary actions to show the company that they are prepared to stand and fight for their livelihoods.”

Officials at Interstate could not be reached for immediate comment.
