One woman has died and three have been treated in hospital following the outbreak, which has been linked to meat on sale at two stores in the town of Paisley.

A Morrisons spokesman confirmed that the meat under investigation had also been used in staff canteens and in sandwiches in the two outlets.

He added that local environmental health officials are due to give an update on the outbreak this afternoon.

Suppliers of meat to Morrisons, including Cranswick Country Foods, are also helping the officials with their investigation.

The outbreak comes amid a multi-million pound ad campaign that depicts Morrisons as the place to go for fresh food.

When the campaign was launched last month, a Morrisons spokesman then told just-food: “”Fresh food is one of the things that make us different, at a time when other retailers are taking fresh food preparation out of supermarkets.”
