A new poll conducted by Latvia’s SKDS statistics office has bought some good news for supermarket operators.

Exactly half of those questioned prefer to buy groceries in supermarkets, while only 37% would rather shop in small grocery stores. The remaining 13% said that they had no preference on the issue.

Supermarkets now control around 20% of Latvia’s grocery market, and 56% of shoppers polled consider the entrance of supermarkets into the country to be a positive thing. Meanwhile 23% said it was a negative event.

Henriks Danusevics, chairman of Latvia’s retail association, explained to journalists yesterday [Wednesday] that consumers prefer supermarkets because of the larger range, better quality and the fact that they will carry higher responsibility for goods that are sold.

Leading supermarket companies currently operating in Lativa include Rimi Latvia, VP Market and Nelda, although Danusevics added that as the market develops, new companies will establish themselves.
