Private equity group Duke Street Capital will receive a delegation from the T&G section of Unite, which claims it has hatched a plan to keep full-scale production going at the site on The Wirral.

In May, Burton’s, which produces brands including Maryland Cookies and Wagon Wheels, said it would stop producing biscuits at the site. The move could lead to the loss of 660 jobs.

Burton’s aims to keep 300 jobs at the site, as it continues to produce chocolate and seasonal confectionery at the factory.

However, the union said Burton’s may have decided to close the site as early as last November. The union’s Franny Joyce said the site has a “viable future”.

“We believe Burton’s Foods only presented us with information that led to a closure decision,” said Joyce. “But we don’t think closure of this traditional base for biscuit manufacturing is the only conclusion.”

Ahead of the meeting, Burton’s told just-food it had entered into talks with union representatives in “a genuine and meaningful way”.

“The management has provided extensive information, beyond established practice for this type of process,” the company added.
